Tennis Overview Tennis is taught as a lifestyle skill... The reason for this is simply because tennis consists of so many disciplines that one can apply in everyday life. Many pleasurable hours can be spent on the tennis courts with family and friends alike. Once the basic skills are mastered, it can become competitive, as long as it is played in the true spirit of the game.
This does not mean that it should become too much effort to pick up your racquet and head to the courts. It should still be a pleasure to go and knock a few balls with family and friends.
More about Lifestyle C and it’s involvement with the game:
We sincerely hope that this serves as motivation to start playing this wonderful sport (if you haven’t already)! Don’t be scared to find your feet on the court. As time goes by you will become better and will then obviously start enjoying it more. Soon you will be adapting your lifestyle and as a result of that allocate more quality time for those close to you.
The first signs of tennis date back as far as 13th Century France, when the "game of the palm of the hand" was played by royalty. The first racquets were introduced in the 16th Century, while English King Henry VIII built a tennis court at Hampton Court Palace during the 1530's. The sport was mostly played indoors and by the end of the 18th Century outdoor tennis took off! Walter Clopton Wingfield was mostly involved in designing a kit that consisted of tennis equipment that was set up on a lawn in order to play the game we know as tennis. This new game of "lawn tennis" spread like a wild fire and soon the rules would be re-written and the scoring adjusted in 1876 by the regulators of lawn tennis, MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club), before handing over control to the All England Club after the first championship in 1877. The United States National Lawn Tennis Association established the second event that would form part of the Grand slam in 1881. The French National championship was held in 1891 and Germany hosted its first national championship in 1896. Davis Cup history goes back as far as 1900 and started as a challenge between America and Great Brittain. Australia joined in 1905 and won the event in 1907. This also meant the birth of the Australasian National Championship in 1905. The International Lawn Tennis Federation, which would serve as the governing body was started in 1913. This organization would ensure the integrity as well as the development and uniformity of the game. The "Open" tennis era practically started in 1967, when Wimbledon announced that it would open its 1968 event to contract professionals. Tennis has evolved drastically since then, with the advent of the tie-break and the birth of the ATP (Association for tennis professionals). One things is for certain, tennis is still loved by millions of players accross the globe and they all will agree on one thing - what a polite game tennis is!
